The best of both energies to heat your home
A dual-energy heating system combines an electric heat pump with a natural gas furnace. The heat pump heats your home most of the year, and natural gas takes over in extreme cold.
Ventilation HiTech, an Énergir partner, installs your dual-energy system in Laval, on the North Shore and in several parts of Montréal. Free estimate, installation and after-sales service from the same team.
What is dual-energy heating?
Dual-energy heating combines two energy sources in one home: Québec electricity and natural gas. It is for homes that are already heated with natural gas through a central system. A heat pump is added, and the two appliances share the work depending on the outdoor temperature.
- Mild days: the heat pump heats your home with electricity, and cools it in summer.
- Extreme cold: below -12 °C or -15 °C depending on the region, the natural gas furnace takes over automatically.
You may have read about “dual fuel” or “hybrid” heat pump systems: those terms describe the equipment. Dual-energy heating adds Hydro-Québec’s Rate DT and Énergir’s grant program, along with the conditions that come with them.

How does a dual-energy heating system work?
A dual-energy heating system combines an electric heat pump with a natural gas furnace. The heat pump heats your home about 70% of the time, at Hydro-Québec’s Rate DT. When the temperature falls below -12 °C (or -15 °C depending on the region), the natural gas furnace takes over automatically.
1. The heat pump handles the mild days
From fall to spring, the heat pump draws heat from the outdoor air and distributes it through your ductwork. In summer, it works the other way around and cools your home.
2. Natural gas takes over in the extreme cold
Below the switchover point, the natural gas furnace comes on without you having to do anything. Your home stays comfortable, even during cold snaps, and you have nothing to adjust.
3. Hydro-Québec’s Rate DT applies to your bill
Rate DT is Hydro-Québec’s electricity rate for homes with dual-energy heating. It has two prices: an advantageous one when the temperature is -12 °C or -15 °C (depending on the region) or higher, and a higher one below that, when your gas furnace takes over. It applies to all the electricity you use, air conditioning included. If you use a lot of electricity during extreme cold, it can cost more than the regular rate.
To get it, a contractor inspects your installation and signs the dual-energy certificate of eligibility, which you send to Hydro-Québec.

Is your home eligible for dual-energy heating?
Dual-energy heating suits homeowners whose home is already heated with natural gas through a central system, either warm-air (forced air) or hot-water. Here are the main conditions of Énergir’s program:
A home heated with electricity only is not eligible for this program. In that case, a heat pump on its own, with Hydro-Québec’s incentives, may be a better fit: see all heat pump rebates in 2026.
Program conditions may change without notice. We confirm them with you when we prepare your estimate.
Grants of up to $7,300
Énergir’s dual-energy grant program, supported by the Government of Québec, can cover up to 80% of the extra cost of equipment and installation for a dual-energy system. Here are the maximum amounts shown by Énergir:
- Single-family home or condo: up to $7,300 with warm-air heating, up to $4,100 with hot-water heating.
- Duplex or triplex: up to $9,100 with warm-air heating, up to $4,800 with hot-water heating.
- Electrical upgrade (if your panel needs to be replaced): additional grants of up to $7,800 for a single-family home or condo, and up to $8,000 for a duplex or triplex.
The exact amount depends on the equipment installed and your building’s characteristics. We factor it into your estimate so you know what you’ll really have left to pay. Financing is also available.

The dual-energy equipment we install
A dual-energy system has two appliances: a heat pump and a natural gas furnace. We install both.
Central heat pump
We install Carrier, Napoleon, Canair and Midea heat pumps with variable-speed compressors that heat down to -25 °C (down to -30 °C for the Midea Evox G3).

Natural gas furnace
We install Napoleon 9600 and 9700 series natural gas furnaces, with 96% and 97% efficiency and an ECM motor. 100% Canadian product.
The manufacturer’s warranty is up to 10 years or more, depending on the model. We confirm with you that the equipment you choose meets the program’s requirements. See the detailed specs on our Heating page, and discover our Air Conditioning service.
Your dual-energy project in 5 steps
1. Free estimate
We assess your home, your current heating system and your eligibility for the grants.
2. Quote and contract
You receive the detailed price, the estimated grant and what you’ll have left to pay. The contract must be signed before the work starts: that is a program condition.
3. Installation
We install the heat pump and connect it to your furnace. For a standard single-family home, the work is usually finished in one day.
4. Certificate and Rate DT
We inspect your installation and sign the dual-energy certificate of eligibility. You send it to Hydro-Québec to move to Rate DT.
5. Grant application and follow-up
We walk you through your grant application, which must be submitted within 12 months of completing the work. After that, we stay on for maintenance and after-sales service.

Frequently asked questions about dual-energy heating
What is the grant for dual-energy heating in a single-family home in Laval?
For a single-family home or condo with warm-air heating, the grant from Énergir and the Government of Québec can reach $7,300, or up to 80% of the extra cost of equipment and installation. The exact amount depends on the equipment installed and your building. Additional help is available for electrical upgrades. We calculate the amount that applies to your home during the free estimate.
Is it still worth heating with natural gas in a dual-energy system?
It can be, because natural gas is only used during extreme cold. The heat pump provides about 70% of your heating at Rate DT, and Énergir aims to cut participants’ natural gas use by about 70%. Actual savings depend on your home, its insulation and your current consumption. We assess them with you before you commit.
My North Shore home is heated with electricity: can I switch to dual-energy heating?
Not under Énergir’s program. It is for Énergir residential customers whose central natural gas heating has been installed for at least 12 months. If your home is heated with electricity, a heat pump on its own, with Hydro-Québec’s incentives, may be a better fit. Contact us: we’ll point you to the option that suits your situation.
Do I have to stay on the dual-energy rate for 10 years after installation?
Yes. The 10-year commitment to the dual-energy rate is a condition of Énergir’s grant program. We explain it to you before you sign, along with the other conditions, so you can decide with full knowledge of the facts. If your situation is unusual (selling your home, for example), Énergir confirms the terms.
At what temperature does the gas furnace take over in a dual-energy system?
Natural gas takes over below -12 °C or -15 °C, depending on your region. The switch is automatic: you have nothing to adjust. Above that threshold, the heat pump heats your home with electricity, at Hydro-Québec’s Rate DT.
What is Hydro-Québec’s Rate DT for a dual-energy home?
Rate DT is Hydro-Québec’s electricity rate for homes with dual-energy heating. It has two prices: an advantageous one when the temperature is -12 °C or -15 °C (depending on the region) or higher, and a higher one below that, when your gas furnace takes over. It applies to all the electricity you use, air conditioning included. If you use a lot of electricity during extreme cold, it can cost more than the regular rate.
How much does it cost to maintain a dual-energy system in a Laval home?
Your system has two appliances to maintain: the heat pump and the gas furnace. The cost depends on the models installed and how often they are serviced. We give you the details in your estimate. Servicing before winter helps keep the system reliable, as we explain in our article on heat pump maintenance.
